When Marico achieved Rs1,000cr in 2004-2005, we celebrated the occasion like any other corporate. Sure enough, we also set ourselves a higher target—touching Rs,2000cr in the next four years—and in due course, that peak was scaled as well. (We actually reached close to Rs2,400cr.) Suddenly, even as we soaked in the euphoria, we found ourselves faced with certain fundamental questions. “What next? Do we set an even higher monetary target? Or do we create a more sustainable sense of success that goes beyond numbers?”
