"Initially, we thought of casting live people as our characters. But we decided to add a twist to the story. Comic strips have always inspired me. Most of the time, they come with funny looking characters such as people caricatured to look like eggs and so on. The artist in me began sketching and it was only after several revisions that I felt I had come close to what I wanted. The conventional route would have been to put some 3D animation around the character. However, both me and my friend and colleague—Prakash Varma of Nirvana Films—thought we would cast real people but in a way so as to fool the audience into thinking it is animation. Considering there has been
some kind of debate around whether the ZooZoos are real people, it’s safe to say we have been successful in our attempt. Indeed, I would give Varma a lot of credit for transforming a mere sketch into a brilliant reality. Varma and me go back a long way. He directed the pug commercials as well, and the two of us share a fantastic rapport. On this campaign too, we worked very closely, trying all along to retain the simple charm of the comic strip even as we struggled to bring to life the characters in a unique sort of way. Part of the dilemma was finding a suitable name, and somehow, we stumbled upon ‘ZooZoo’. It seemed the closest to a pet name—cute, likeable,"
